About the work
In ‘We Lost Dancing’, Stuart Semple plays with the image of adolescence and a sense of nostalgia for youthful freedom.
Taking its title from the Fred Again song of the same name, the work addresses a sense of a post-pandemic new normal and a longing for a culture that has been lost.
Semple’s work has revisited the subject of the teenager and the reduction of live music, particularly in London where sadly many iconic venues have been permanently shuttered.
This melancholy sense of loss in the work creates an uneasy tension with Semple’s toxic green colour palette.
